In all her years, Marilyn had never seen a storm like it; it was so intense. She was heavily pregnant and so scared.
When the typhoon hit, Marilyn and her family sought shelter. They thought the house was sturdy until they saw the seawater rising. Suddenly, the waves crashed into the house, destroying it, and they were again forced out into the storm to find somewhere safe to stay.
Marilyn was shaking with fear, worried she could give birth at any moment. She tried to remain calm as they fled; battling the storm and the devastation, until eventually they found shelter at a school.
Caught up in a fatal typhoon
Marilyn and her family were caught up in Typhoon Haiyan, which struck the Philippines in the early hours of 8 November 2013. It was estimated to be the strongest storm ever to make landfall.
Around 14 million people were affected as Typhoon Haiyan swept through the central Philippines islands, killing more than 6,000 people and leaving a wide path of destruction and debris in its wake.
Homes were flattened by surging floodwaters and powerful winds, and many were turned into piles of splintered wood. Whole villages were swept away as trees were uprooted, cars tossed into the air, and electricity and power lines scattered by winds of up to 200mph.
More than 4 million people were forced from their homes as more than half a million homes were destroyed. Many lost everything.
Marilyn's livelihood was destroyed
Marilyn was one of millions affected. She gave birth to a healthy baby shortly after the typhoon but she lost her home and her livelihood – a small convenience store, which was destroyed in the disaster.
In the immediate aftermath, our partners in the Philippines reached out to people across the Philippines, providing vital supplies including food, water, sleeping mats, blankets and shelter kits. But there is still more to be done.
This is where you come in.
